Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin penthēmimeris.
Etymology: < classical Latin penthēmimeris (in post-classical Latin also penthemimeres ) metrical unit consisting of two and a half feet, caesura in the middle of the third foot (2nd cent. a.d.; 1st cent. a.d. as a Greek word) < Hellenistic Greek πενθημιμερές metrical unit consisting of two and a half feet, πενθημιμερής caesura in the middle of the third foot, uses as noun of neuter (short for πενθημιμερὲς μέτρον ) and feminine (short for τομὴ πενθημιμερής ) respectively of πενθημιμερής consisting of five halves < ancient Greek πέντε five (see penta- comb. form) + ἡμι- hemi- prefix + -μερής (see -mere comb. form).For earlier use of the Latin word in an English context compare:OE Byrhtferð Enchiridion (Ashm.) (1995) ii. i. 90 Þa todælednyssa on þam uersum synd feower, þæs ðe þa gleawe boceras tellað, and synd þus on Grecisc gecwedene: pentimemeris, eptimemeris, cata triton crokeon [read trokeon], bucolice ptomen. Classical Prosody.
A metrical unit consisting of two and a half feet, esp. constituting half of a pentameter, or the first part of an iambic trimeter or hexameter when the caesura occurs in the middle of the third foot. Cf. hephthemimer n.

1992 Classical Rev. 42 9 Bergk..thought that we have here a dactylic tetrameter followed by an iambic penthemimer, a similarly odd combination.
