Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Greek πεντηκόντερος, πεντηκόντορος.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πεντηκόντερος (also πεντηκόντορος) ship with fifty oars, use as noun (short for πεντηκόντερος ναῦς ) of πεντηκόντερος , adjective < πεντήκοντα fifty (see pentecontarch n.). Compare Italian pentecontoro (a1494).
