Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pentecontarchus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pentecontarchus commander of fifty (Vetus Latina) < ancient Greek πεντηκόνταρχος commander of fifty (at Athens; also in Septuagint) < πεντήκοντα fifty (see note) + -αρχος -arch comb. form1.Ancient Greek πεντήκοντα is < πέντε five (see penta- comb. form) + -κοντα , suffix forming cardinal numerals from thirty to ninety, originally neuter plural corresponding to -κατι , dual (i.e. ‘two units of ten’) < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin -gintā . Compare Sanskrit pañcāśat fifty. Sense b arose from a misinterpretation of the Greek term by a first or second century grammarian. Compare penteconter n.2 and trierarch n.
