Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: penta- comb. form, athlete n.
Etymology: < penta- comb. form + athlete n., after pentathlon n. Compare Byzantine Greek πενταθλητής. Compare also ancient Greek πένταθλος competitor in a pentathlon ( > classical Latin pentathlus; compare Middle French, French pentathle (1581)).
1. Ancient History. An athlete who competed in a pentathlon in the ancient Greek and Roman games (see pentathlon n. 1).
