Origin: A borrowing from Latin; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymon: Latin perdīx.
Etymology: < classical Latin perdīx partridge n.; in later use after scientific Latin Perdix, genus name (see below).For earlier borrowing of Middle French perdrix partridge n. compare:c1485 ( G. Hay Bk. Gouernaunce of Princis (1993) xxvi. 100 And than is spedefull till haue all gude metis—hate and moiste..—as foulis..capouns perdrix and phesandis.
