Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: perdite adj.; Latin perditus , -ly suffix2.
Etymology: < perdite adj. or its etymon classical Latin perditus desperate, abandoned + -ly suffix2, after classical Latin perditē in a desperate manner, in a recklessly violent way. With quot. a1632 compare classical Latin perditē amāre to be desperately in love (Catullus 104. 3).
Obsolete.
Desperately, with abandon. Also: wickedly.
