Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin percuss- , percutere , -ant suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin percuss-, past participial stem of percutere (see percuss v.) + -ant suffix1, after other heraldic adjectives, as e.g. passant adj. (compare sense 3 at that entry), rampant adj. (compare sense 1c at that entry), etc. Compare earlier percussed adj. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pəɹkɒ·sănt) /pəˈkʌsənt/.
Heraldry. Obsolete.
Of the tail of a lion or other animal: bent round as if lashing the animal's side. See also percussed adj.
