Etymology: < the name of Augusto Pellegrini (c1880–1940), Italian physician + the name of Alfred Stieda (1869–1945), German physician (who described the condition in 1905 and 1908 respectively), after French maladie de Pellegrini-Stieda (R. Petrignani 1930, in Contrib. à l'Étude de la Maladie de Pellegrini-Stieda (Thèse, Paris) 14).
