Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pelit.
Etymology: < German Pelit (C. F. Naumann Lehrb. d. Geognosie (1850) I. 487) < ancient Greek πηλός clay, earth, mud (see pelo- comb. form) + German -it -ite suffix1.
Geology.
A sediment or sedimentary rock or composed of very fine clay or mud particles, esp. of hydrated aluminium silicates; lutite.
