Etymology: < Pelion (classical Latin Pēlion, ancient Greek Πήλιον), the name of a mountain in Thessaly. In the phrase to pile Pelion upon Ossa, after classical Latin imponere Pelio Ossam (Virgil Georgics 1. 281); Ossa is the name of another mountain in Thessaly.
Coupled with Ossa. A mountain of difficulty; a mighty task or thing, compounded by another which is equally mighty. Esp. in to pile (also heap) Pelion upon Ossa and variants: to add to what is already great; to add difficulty to difficulty.
