Etymology: < Hawaiian Pele, the name of the goddess of volcanoes < pele lava flow. In sense 1, after Hawaiian lauoho o Pele. In sense 2, after Hawaiian waimaka o Pele. N.E.D. (1904) enters sense 1 under Pele's hair and gives the pronunciation as (pī·liz hēəɹ) /ˈpiːliːz hɛə(r)/.
Geology.
1. Pele's hair n. volcanic glass in the form of fine threads, formed by the rapid solidification of windblown lava and originally found around the Hawaiian volcano Kilauea.
