Origin: Probably of multiple origins. A borrowing from French. Probably also partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pelade; Latin pelada.
Etymology: < French pelade baldness, (especially) alopecia areata (c1590 in Middle French; 1545 in sense ‘bald patch’; < peler (see pelure n.1) + -ade -ade suffix); in early use probably via post-classical Latin pelada.
Medicine. rare.
Alopecia; spec. alopecia areata. Cf. pseudopelade n. at pseudo- comb. form 2.
