单词 peking
释义

Pekingn.

Brit. /ˌpiːˈkɪŋ/, U.S. /piˈkɪŋ/, /ˈpiˈkɪŋ/, /ˈpeɪˈkɪŋ/
Forms: 1700s– Pekin, 1800s– Peking. Also with lower-case initial.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Peking.
Etymology: < Peking, the name of the capital city of China (now usually Beijing , Chinese Běijīng , Wade-Giles transcription Pei-ching (formerly also transliterated Pekin ), lit. ‘northern capital’, contrasted with Nánjīng ‘southern capital’). With sense 1 compare French pékin (1564 in Middle French in an isolated attestation as pekin; subsequently from 1756).The presence of medial k in the name of the city is explained by the fact that the stop /k/ (Pinyin g ) was the initial consonant of the second element of the name in Middle Chinese and in Old Mandarin (14th cent.) and persisted until the arrival of the Jesuit missionaries who first transmitted the name to the West. The place name is earliest attested in English in the forms Paquin and Pequin (early 17th cent., probably after Portuguese Pequin ); the forms Pekin and Peking occur from the later 17th cent. Pekin was quite commonly used in the 19th cent., but Peking was usual in the 20th cent. until the adoption of the more authentic form Beijing . For the current word the spelling Peking is now usual in the simple senses apart from sense 1 and in the better attested compounds apart from Pekin robin. O.E.D.Suppl. (1982) also gives the pronunciation (pī·ki·n) /ˈpiːˈkɪn/ for the form Pekin.
