Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pessulus.
Etymology: < classical Latin pessulus a bolt (compare quot. 1805 at sense 1) < ancient Greek πάσσαλος (Attic πάτταλος ): see passalid adj. and n.
Zoology.
1. In certain rodents: a small bone in the ear which passes through the fork of the stapes and holds it in place. Obsolete. rare.
