Etymology: < classical Latin pessimum lowest quality, worst condition, greatest detriment, use as noun of neuter of pessimus worst < the same base as pēior worse (see pejorate v.) + -imus , extended form of suffix forming superlatives (see -most suffix). Compare German Pessimum , noun (1910 or earlier). Compare earlier minimum n. and later optimum n.
