Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French peisson, peson.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman peisson, peson, etc., and Middle French peson a small weight of twenty-four to forty-three ounces (1244 in Old French), a balance weight on a spindle (1260), a type of balance similar to a steelyard (13th cent.) < Anglo-Norman and Old French peis peise n. + -on , diminutive suffix (compare -oon suffix).
Obsolete. rare.
A balance similar to a steelyard, employing balls as counterweights.
