Etymology: Ultimately a variant of pekan n., although the introduction of -s- is difficult to explain. N.E.D. (1905) s.v. suggests that the word is ‘a French spelling of pekan n. ’, probably by analogy with e.g. pastèque pasteque n. or pasquira , variant of paquira (see peccary n.), but no such form has been traced in French.
