Origin: A borrowing from Syriac. Etymon: Syriac p'shīṭā.

Etymology: < Syriac p'shīṭā, p'shīṭō, p'shīṭtā, p'shīṭtō, literally ‘the Simple’, ‘the Plain’. Compare post-classical Latin Peschito (1785).The two Syriac forms are respectively masculine and feminine of the adjective in the emphatic state, the latter agreeing with mappaqtā, mappaqtō, ‘version’. The final -ā and -ō represent the same vowel in Eastern and Western Syriac pronunciation respectively.

Designating the principal ancient Syriac version of the Bible. Frequently as n.: this version.So far as is known the name appears first in Moses Bar Kepha, 813–903. The Peshitta Old Testament was made from Hebrew probably over the course of the 2nd cent. a.d.; the Peshitta New Testament was translated from Greek and represents a revision or recension made early in the 5th cent. of a translation going back, in part at least, to the 2nd cent., earlier forms of which are preserved in the Sinaitic and Curetonian manuscripts. Later versions, more verbally rendering the Greek, were the Philoxenian and Harklean.
