Etymology: < scientific Latin Pentastoma (C. A. Rudolphi Entozoorum Synopsis Mantissa (1819) 123) or Pentastomum (F. C. H. Creplin Novæ Observationes de Entozois (1829) 76), genus name < ancient Greek πεντάστομος having five mouths or openings (see pentastomous adj.; compare -stome comb. form); so called from the appearance of the mouth and the two pairs of chitinoid hooks adjacent to it.

1857 E. Lankester tr. G. F. Küchenmeister On Animal & Veg. Parasites Human Body II. 7 People took these four feet for the same number of oral orifices, so that counting in the true mouth, five such openings were obtained and the animal received the name of Pentastomum.
