Etymology: < Barnstaple, the name of a town in Devon + oven n.Barnstaple was formerly known for the manufacture of pottery, especially (from the end of the 16th cent.) prefabricated unglazed cloam ovens, which enjoyed considerable commercial success in the West Country, Ireland, and the North American colonies.
Now chiefly historical.
Especially in the West Country: an earthenware pot with three short legs and a lid, used for baking over a fire. Cf. bastable n.
