Etymology: < French pegmatite (J. A. H. Lucas Tableau méthodique des espèces minerales, seconde partie (1813) 523, citing use by Tondi in 1811) < ancient Greek πηγματ- , πῆγμα , in sense of ‘something joined together or congealed’ (see pegma n.) + French -ite -ite suffix¹.

Geology.

A coarsely crystallized rock commonly occurring in igneous intrusions, esp. dykes, and consisting mainly of feldspar and quartz, with the crystals often forming a graphic surface pattern.
