Etymology: < classical Latin pēgma framework, movable stage or scaffold in a theatre < Hellenistic Greek πῆγμα , already in ancient Greek denoting a substance which causes curdling < πηγνύναι to fix, fasten (see pectic adj.) + -μα (see -oma comb. form).

Now historical and rare.

A kind of framework or stage used in theatrical displays, pageants, etc., sometimes bearing an inscription; (formerly also) the inscription itself.
