Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps an arbitrary alteration of pavisade n., perhaps intended also to pun on classical Latin pāvōn-, pāvō peacock (see pawn n.2) in the context of quot. 1910 at main sense.In quot. 1950 at main sense, Brown is referring directly to Kipling's usage in quot. 1910 at main sense.
intransitive. To display an impressive or opulent array of clothing and ornament; to flaunt one's appearance.
