Etymology: < French pédimane (F. Vicq-d'Azyr in Encycl. Méthodique (1792), Systême Anatomique II. Quadrupèdes p. xcv; also scientific Latin Pedimani) < classical Latin pedi- pedi- comb. form + manus hand (see manus n.¹). Compare scientific Latin Pedimana (W. Ross & J. Macartney, translating Cuvier Lect. Compar. Anat. (1802) II. xiv. v. 595), Pedimanes (1821 or earlier). Compare bimane n., quadrumane n. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pe·dimēn) /ˈpɛdɪmeɪn/.
