Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pediculosus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pediculosus infested with lice (4th cent.) < classical Latin pēdiculus pedicle n.1 + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare Old French pediculous (13th cent. in an isolated attestation). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pĭdi·kiŭləs) /pɪˈdɪkjʊləs/.
Of or relating to a louse or lice, esp. infested with lice. Also figurative: bad, contemptible, often used as a general term of abuse (cf. lousy adj. 2).
