Etymology: < French pédiculaire (1545 in maladie pédiculaire , 15th cent. as noun as the name of a plant used to treat lice) and its etymon post-classical Latin pedicularis (in morbus pedicularis , 5th cent.; already in classical Latin in herba pēdiculāris name of a plant used to treat lice) < classical Latin pēdiculus pedicle n.1 + -āris -ar suffix1. N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pĭdi·kiŭlăɹ) /pɪˈdɪkjʊlə(r)/.
