This, with the English forms, indicates an earlier Old French baldestrot , baudestrot , the first element of which appears to be bald , baud ‘bold, forward, lively, gay’ (see baude adj.); the second suggests the Germanic strutt , strut n.¹ (Cant names have been frequent for the class of persons in question.) This is probably the full word from which bawd was shortened; the form bawstrop seems to be the origin of the word bronstrops n. a procuress, which is frequent in Middleton's comedies.
