单词 pauncher
释义

paunchern.

Forms: Middle English pancere, Middle English pancherde, Middle English panchere, Middle English pauncher, Middle English pauntcher, Middle English pawncherde, Middle English pawnchere. N.E.D. (1904) also records a form Middle English pawunchere.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French panciere.
Etymology: < Middle French panciere (feminine) part of armour protecting the lower part of the body (c1300 in Old French; also 1352–6 as panchiere ; compare in same sense Middle French panchier , masculine (c1470; also 1490 as pancier )) < Old French pance , panche paunch n.1 + -ière (compare -ier suffix). With sense 2 compare post-classical Latin pancerea , panceria (from early 12th cent.; also as panseria , panzeria ), Italian panciera (beginning of the 13th cent. as †panziera ), Old Occitan pansiera (1331), and also Middle Dutch panser , pansier , panchier (Dutch pantser ), Middle Low German panser , panscher , panzer , Middle High German panzer , panzier (German Panzer ), Old Icelandic panzari , Old Swedish panzar , panzare (Swedish pansar ), all in sense ‘piece of armour protecting the lower part of the body’. Sense 1 is apparently not attested in French; compare paunce n. 2.It is unclear whether the following shows an error for this word in sense 1, and hence a slight antedating:1388 Inquisition Misc. (P.R.O.: C 145/239/10) m.2 j tunicam de russet..j par. caligarum..j paunch...ij freresgerdeles.
