Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French paucité; Latin paucitās.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French paucité (2nd half of 13th cent. in Old French; French paucité ) and its etymon (ii) classical Latin paucitās smallness of number, fewness, a small number, in post-classical Latin also smallness of quantity (1363 in Chauliac) < paucus few (see pauci- comb. form) + -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix).
