Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: accelerometer n., -graph comb. form.
Etymology: < accelero- (in accelerometer n.) + -graph comb. form, after French accélérographe (M. Marcel-Deprez 1874, in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. 79 981).
A device or apparatus for measuring and recording acceleration; spec. a seismograph for recording large earth tremors by this means.In quot. 1875: a device for producing a graphical record of how the pressure in a closed tube varies during the combustion of a charge.
