1861 H. Sainte-Claire Deville in Chem. News 9 Nov. 241/1 This substance, obtained from Baux, near Arles, consisted of small round grains buried in a perfectly crystallised pure limestone... I then recognised it as the mineral to which M. Berthier gave the name of Bauxite. It is a hydrate of alumina which M. Dufrénoy has ranked with gibsite, or rather diaspore.
