Etymology: < peri- prefix + Hellenistic Greek στάλσις checking of a flow (Galen; < the stem of ancient Greek στέλλειν to set, place (see stole n.1) + -σις -sis suffix), after peristaltic adj.
Physiology.
The propulsive movement of the gastrointestinal tract and other tubular organs (or, rarely, organisms), consisting of coordinated waves of contraction and relaxation of the circular muscle; an instance of such movement.
