1889 Cent. Dict. at Hexameter Perissosyllabic hexameter, in anc. pros., a verse consisting of a dactylic tetrameter and an ithyphallic..; a greater Archilochian. It was regarded by some ancient writers as a variation from the heroic hexameter made by inserting a redundant syllable (whence the epithet perissosyllabic) before the last syllable of the fifth foot in its dactylic form.
1905 Univ. of Pennsylvania Record of Class of 1905 348 Oliver Hazard Perry Pepper thoughtfully remarks, ‘Learning to bear up cheerfully under the burden of a perissosyllabic cognomen.’
