释义

perissodactyladj.n.

Brit. /ˌpɛrᵻsə(ʊ)ˈdakt(ᵻ)l/, /pᵻˌrɪsə(ʊ)ˈdakt(ᵻ)l/, U.S. /pəˌrɪsəˈdæktl/
Forms: 1800s– perissodactyl, 1800s– perissodactyle. Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek περισσοδάκτυλος.
Etymology: < Byzantine Greek περισσοδάκτυλος (see note) < ancient Greek περισσός uneven, odd (see perissad adj. and n.) + -δακτυλος -dactyl comb. form (compare quot. 18482 at sense A.). Compare scientific Latin Perissodactyla , suborder (now order) name (R. Owen 1848, in Q. Jrnl. Geol. Soc. 4 131), and French périssodactyle (1848). Compare artiodactyl adj., artiodactyl n.Byzantine Greek περισσοδάκτυλος is glossed by R. Owen (in the source of quot. 18481 at sense A.) as ‘qui digitos habet impares numero’ having an odd number of fingers or toes. Liddell and Scott's Greek-Eng. Lexicon (ed. 9, 1940) glosses the word as ‘with more than the usual number of fingers or toes’, but in the Revised Supplement (1996) this has been amended to ‘having toes of unequal length, of a hen’. With perissodactylic adj. at Derivatives compare earlier anisodactylic adj. at aniso- comb. form . With perissodactylous adj. at Derivatives compare -dactylous comb. form.
