Etymology: < post-classical Latin peripneumonia (frequently in Caelius Aurelianus, 5th cent.; also peripleumonia , 4th cent.) < ancient Greek περιπνευμονία (Hippocrates; also περιπλευμονία ) < περι- peri- prefix + πνεύμων (also πλεύμων ) lungs (see pneumono- comb. form) + -ία -y suffix³. In sense 2 after French péripneumonie (1794 in this sense).
