单词 peccavi
释义

peccaviint.n.

Brit. /pɛˈkɑːvi/, /pəˈkɑːvi/, U.S. /pəˈkɑvi/
Forms: 1500s–1600s peccaui, 1600s pecavie, 1600s pecavy, 1600s 1800s peccavy, 1600s– peccavi, 1800s pecavi.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin peccāvī, peccāre.
Etymology: < classical Latin peccāvī I have done wrong, in post-classical Latin also ‘I have sinned’, 1st person singular perfect of peccāre to do wrong (see peccant adj. and n.; compare note below). Compare Middle French, French peccavi an act of contrition (c1470 in the phrase dire peccavi). The expression occurs frequently in the Vulgate, including 2 Samuel 12:13 (spoken by David, on hearing the reproof of the prophet Nathan), Psalm 40:5, Psalm 50:6 (also formerly ascribed to David; compare quot. 1509 at sense A.). In the following quot. 1616, Latin peccavi has been put into the Latin third person singular, perhaps partly because it occurs in an embedded clause and the speaker has apparently slipped into indirect speech, and partly for the purpose of rhyme:1616 J. Lane Contin. Squire's Tale (1887) xi. 115 ‘Dread Dame’ (quoth shee) ‘because hee cries “peccauit”, Wee bothe will sue his special supplicauit’. N.E.D. (1904) gives the naturalized pronunciation (pekēi·vəi) /pɛˈkeɪvaɪ/, and the non-naturalized (pekkā·vī) /pɛkˈkɑːviː/.
