Etymology: < classical Latin peccātiōn-, peccātiō wrongdoing < peccāt- , past participial stem of peccāre to sin (see peccant adj. and n.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare earlier peccancy n.In quot. 1861 apparently as allusion to preceding peccavi (see peccavi int. and n.).
