Origin: A borrowing from a Cariban language.
Etymology: Ultimately < a northern Cariban language (compare Apalai pakira , paquira ). Compare Spanish baquira , vaquira (Oviedo 1535); French †paquira (A. Biet Dict. des. Galibis 1664; this form is common in French and Spanish writers of the 18th cent.), pécari (1698); Italian pachira (Clavigero 1780–1; reported in N.E.D. (1904) as ‘still current in the Apalai and Ouayana dialects of Guiana’); Dutch peequiera (18th cent.). The form pockiero (see quot. 1613) also appears in the 18th-cent. Dictionarium Galibi.
Any of several dark-furred gregarious piglike mammals constituting the artiodactyl family Tayassuidae, which inhabit forest and forest scrub from the south-western United States to Paraguay. Also: the skin of such an animal, tanned and used esp. for making gloves; the flesh of a peccary as food.
