Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French peau de soie.
Etymology: Probably < French peau de soie, literally ‘skin of silk’ (although apparently not attested in this sense until 1888; perhaps a commercial name in early use) < peau (see pell n.1) + de de prep. + soie soy n.2 Perhaps compare the earlier term (for a different kind of silk fabric) pou-de-soie : see paduasoy n., poult-de-soie n.
A soft heavy silk, closely woven and with a dull satin face on both sides; a cheaper imitation of this. Also as adj.: made of such material.
