Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French peau de chagrin.
Etymology: < French peau de chagrin, literally ‘skin of grained leather’ (end of the 16th cent. in literal use as peau de sagrin , 1831 as the title of a work by Balzac, and subsequently in metaphorical use with allusion to this: see note) < peau (see pell n.1) + de de prep. + chagrin shagreen n.In Balzac's novel a piece of shagreen gradually diminishes in size as each wish of its owner is granted through its magic power; in the moment the skin shrinks to nothing, he dies.
Used allusively to indicate the progressive diminution of something, esp. the human lifespan.
