Etymology: < baston n. + -ate suffix3, after either Middle French, French †bastonner (12th cent. in Old French as bastuner , earliest in the extended use ‘to vex, harass’, early 13th cent. in the literal sense; now bâtonner ) or Italian bastonare (14th cent.). Compare slightly later bastinade v.
Obsolete.
transitive. To beat or thrash with a stick, cudgel, etc. Cf. baston v.
