Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: French patriotique ; patriot n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: In quot. 1653 at sense A. 1 < French patriotique (1532 in Middle French in the passage translated, apparently in an isolated attestation; 1750 in sense A. 2) < post-classical Latin patrioticus of or belonging to one's country (6th cent.) < ancient Greek πατριωτικός of or belonging to a fellow-countryman or clan < πατριώτης patriot n. + -ικός -ic suffix. In later use independently < patriot n. + -ic suffix. Compare German patriotisch (1624 or earlier).
