Etymology: < the name of E. L. M. Patrin (1742–1815), French geologist + -ite suffix1. In sense 1 named by J. Pinkerton (see quot. 18112 at sense 1); in sense 2 after German Patrinit (W. Haidinger Handb. der bestimmenden Mineralogie (1845) 568).
