单词 patrate
释义

patrateadj.

Forms: 1500s patrat.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin patrātus.
Etymology: < classical Latin patrātus, of uncertain and disputed origin.Classical Latin patrātus is held by some to be the past participle of patrāre to effect, conclude (see patration n.), but there are semantic difficulties with this view. Others regard it as an adjective (compare -ate suffix2) derived from pater father (see pater n.2); others again consider patrātus to represent an original genitive patrātūs of an otherwise unrecorded noun, subsequently reinterpreted as an adjective.
Roman History. Scottish. Obsolete. rare.
father patrate n. [after classical Latin pater patrātus; compare Middle French pere patrat (1352–6 in the passages corresponding to quots. 15331, 15332 in the French translation of this text)] a fetial priest who performs religious rites in the ratification of a treaty.
