Etymology: < Spanish patio courtyard (1414; 1397 or earlier in sense ‘building plot’), either < Catalan pati courtyard (1381–6; 1207 or earlier in sense ‘building plot’), or < Old Occitan pati uncultivated land, common grazing space (c1150; also as patu; Occitan pati, pàtus, also in sense ‘courtyard’); further etymology uncertain and disputed: see J.
