Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps (as suggested by Sc. National Dict. s.v.) originally imitative of a slight, high-pitched sound (compare peek v.2), influenced in form by pallie adj. Compare peely-wally adj.Jamieson (see quot. 1808) suggests a connection with French pelé peeled, use as adjective of past participle of peler to skin, peel (see pill v.1, and compare peel v.1).
Scottish.
Thin; gaunt; pale. Cf. peely-wally adj.
