Etymology: < Pedro, Spanish male forename (see Peter n. and int.) + Sancho, Spanish male forename, perhaps after pedro n.; compare sancho n.³It is possible that reference is being made to the name of Pedro Sancho de la Hoz (1514–47), Spanish chronicler; however the freedom with which (in early use) the name of the game was reversed to Sancho Pedro n. suggests this is probably not the case.
