Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: pedo- comb. form2, -on suffix1; Greek πέδον.
Etymology: Either < pedo- comb. form2 + -on suffix1, or < ancient Greek πέδον ground, earth (see pedo- comb. form2).
Soil Science.
A notional column of soil that extends vertically from the surface to the underlying parent material and is of sufficient area (usually at least a square metre) to be representative of the surrounding soil and its horizons.
