Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pedo- comb. form1, -mancy comb. form.
Etymology: < pedo- comb. form1 + -mancy comb. form. Compare Italian pedomanzia a kind of divination (1561). Compare podomancy n. at podo- comb. form and earlier chiromancy n.In form pedimancy influenced by Latin pedi- pedi- comb. form. In form pædomancy apparently influenced by paedo- comb. form.
Now rare.
Divination or fortune-telling by inspection of the soles of the feet.Treated in N.E.D. (1904) as a humorous invention of Gabriel Harvey (see quot. 1593).

1894 Cent. Mag. Feb. 635/2 A similar pseudo-science could be constructed in relation to the feet, especially if applied to that proportion of mankind who are shoeless. Indeed, one form of ancient divination was known as pedomancy.
1952 Sci. Monthly Dec. 357/1 Chiromancy is at least 5000 years old in China, where the reading of the feet, or pedomancy, was also practiced.
