Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: patent adj., leather n.
Etymology: < patent adj. + leather n.The process of making patent leather was improved and commercially developed by Seth Boyden (1788–1870), U.S. inventor, but was not invented by him: see Sci. Amer. (1850) 3 Aug. 368/3.
